Large Study Finds Slower Cognitive Growth

Researchers at the University of California San Diego say teens who start using cannabis show slower gains in thinking skills over time. The study followed more than 11,000 participants from ages 9 and 10 into the teen years, using cognitive testing along with self-reports and toxicology checks. According to the report, cannabis use was linked to reduced growth in memory, attention, language, and processing speed during key brain-development years.

The finding matters because it does not describe one bad test score after use. It points to a pattern where users improved more slowly than their non-using peers as they got older. In a smaller group, teens with evidence of tetrahydrocannabinol exposure showed worse memory over time, while the cannabidiol group did not show the same pattern, though that group was small. That detail will draw close attention from parents who want clear answers, not slogans.

A Long Pattern in the Research

This new study fits a long line of research that has raised the same warning for years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cannabis use that begins in adolescence can have permanent effects on the developing brain, including problems with memory, learning, attention, and thinking. Earlier reviews also found that heavy adolescent use is linked to poorer attention, learning, sequencing, and psychomotor speed, even after about a month of abstinence.

Other reviews point in the same direction, especially for teens who start early or use often. A major meta-analysis found a small but significant drop in cognitive functioning among frequent or heavy users. Harvard psychiatry researchers have also reported that younger age at first use is tied to worse cognitive functioning and learning inefficiencies. Taken together, the literature suggests that teen cannabis use is not a harmless rite of passage.

What the Study Can and Cannot Prove

The evidence is strong on association, but it is not the same as proof of direct cause in every case. The review literature also says some cognitive problems appear to improve with sustained abstinence, which matters for how families read these findings. At the same time, the newest longitudinal data are notable because they track the same young people over time, instead of relying on a single snapshot.

That is why this story should be read as a public-health warning, not a panic piece. The plain message is simple: the developing brain may not shrug off cannabis the way adult users assume it can. For parents, school leaders, and lawmakers, the question is no longer whether the issue deserves attention. The question is whether adults will take teen brain health seriously before the damage becomes harder to reverse.
