The PL-16’s variable-thrust motor tries to solve the same problem differently. By throttling down during cruise and surging at the end, it saves energy for the final kill phase. In theory, this matches what the Meteor’s ramjet does. But the Meteor’s approach has been tested and verified. The PL-16’s real-world terminal performance against a hard-maneuvering target remains unproven.

The honest assessment here is simple: China may have built something genuinely dangerous, or it may have built something that looks impressive on a slide. Defense history is full of weapons that promised more than they delivered. The PL-16 deserves serious attention, but serious skepticism too.
What is clear is that China is investing heavily in long-range air combat weapons. The PL-16, if it performs anywhere near the leaked specs, would give Chinese pilots a real edge in any fight over the Pacific or Taiwan Strait. The U.S. AIM-260 program is the American answer, with a reported range that dwarfs both the PL-16 and the Meteor.
